And the biggest culprit in the mass incarceration crisis are government policies and government actors. The United States incarcerates more of its people than any other nation in the world. Udi Ofer, Deputy National Political Director of the ACLU noted, “While this executive order is important, it is well short of what the nation needs to end mass incarceration and racism in the criminal legal system. They care more about making money than actually helping you transition into society.” I was denied permission to even see my own family. “The GEO halfway house felt like moving from state prison to a local jail. William Palmer II spent six months in the GEO Re-Entry Services facility in San Francisco upon leaving state prison in March of 2019. These too have come under fire from both advocates, and those who receive such “services.” Transitional facilities, ankle bracelets, and other post-incarceration services present major revenue opportunities. Hundreds of thousands of people took action to get us this initial victory and we won’t stop until this torture apparatus is abolished."Īdditionally, physical prison facilities aren’t the only way that people are in contact with criminal justice and immigrant detention systems. Because of grassroots organizing and the power of social movements we were able to force some of the biggest banks in the world to stop financing the private prison industry –– and elected leaders are listening. Private prisons have always exploited and capitalized off the worst of the overall carceral system, and we will keep pushing federal leaders to end all contracts with private prisons, including DHS and ICE. Nancy Treviño of said, “The inhumane and cruel conditions that our immigrant families face in for-profit detention centers have resulted in torture, abuse, and deaths. Over the course of the Trump administration, ICE significantly expanded the number of immigrants in detention, adding over 17,000 beds to the system with over 80% of immigrants in detention housed in privately-run facilities. Two other major sources of government contracts for these companies are immigrant detention, and post-incarceration “services” like transition housing and electronic monitoring. What the order didn’t touch - but may be clarified in additional statements moving forward - are two of the major areas private prisons companies have diversified into as the writing has been on the walls of the DOJ.
